With one of the longest national coastlines in Europe, our seas are home to thousands of marine species, providing us with resources from fish to renewable marine energy (UK Parliament Post, 2020).
Seagrass can capture carbon from the atmosphere up to 35 times faster than tropical rainforest; in fact, mangroves, salt marshes and seagrass meadows can store far more carbon per hectare than most terrestrial ecosystems (IPCC, 2019).
Marine meadows protect coastlines from erosion and shelter important species and their nurseries (IPCC, 2019).
Established oyster reefs improve water quality, remove nitrogen, sequester carbon and boost biodiversity under the sea (Howie, 2021).
