On a chilly morning, 14 members of LRG gathered to join Buglife and GreenTheUK for a local volunteering event. Located at The Mount, a grassy hill on the south side of Guildford with views reaching London, the event involved working in chalk grassland, one of Britain's most biodiverse habitats and a crucial home for many invertebrates.
The aim of the day was to clear out as much woody scrub as possible from the field, making way for a myriad of wildflowers to grow in their absence without being choked out. The team got to work quickly, but working on an angled hillside and with roots extending deep underground made it very tough. Teamwork provided the solution, with one member of LRG using a tree popper to start leveraging the scrub, whilst another member of LRG used a mattock to clear soil off the deeper roots.
1pm brought a nice break for lunch which quickly turned into an incredible rain and hail storm, soaking the few who stayed up on the hillside to eat. Thankfully it subsided within the hour, and the softened-up soil made it easier to pull out tough roots in the afternoon.
Many thanks to the LRG team for braving the weather and powering through the tough work - your efforts will have a lasting impact visible throughout the year.
