New Cross Gate Cutting

Hailing from all across London, RS Group brought together their new ESG team to take part in keeping London's greenspaces healthy. Despite the heat, the team gathered at New Cross Gate Cutting, a nature reserve running alongside track tracks that has become a bastion of biodiversity in London. The site boasts a mixture of habitats, alternating between wildflower meadows and woodlands, both of which require maintenance to stay healthy.
The day began working in the upper part of the reserve, splitting the group across multiple projects. One team set off to clear a tree that had fallen onto the pathway and was blocking access to half the site, another was clearing brambles from the wildflower meadow, and a third team was restoring and repairing the bench near the gate. Whilst the site is only open to the public a few days a year, it is important to make it as accessible as possible for the local community.
After a quick lunch break, the group headed down to the lower wildflower meadow. Once again, they split into multiple teams to tackle different projects. More brambles were cleared out from the meadow, which is crucial to maintaining the habitat that so many species rely on. If brambles take over and crowd out the wildflowers, eventually it will turn into more woodland. Another group was in charge of building an insect hotel for stag beetles, carefully placing upright wooden logs in a newly-dug hole, and the last group continued their construction skills by reparing another bench in the meadow.
Thank you to RS Group who pushed through the hot weather to ensure the site remains healthy and benefical to as many different species as possible. Their work to improving the accesibility of the site will help to allow as many people as possible to enjoy it during community open days.
