Hockeridge and Pancake Woods
Royal Forestry Society
14 Oct 2025
As part of their Social Value commitments, two teams from Virgin Media O₂ joined GreenTheUK and the Royal Forestry Society yesterday to volunteer at Hockeridge and Pancake Woods, helping to maintain and protect this historically significant site.
The day began with a guided walk through the woodland, exploring its rich past from traces of medieval rabbit warrens to redwoods planted in honour of the Duke of Wellington. The group also learned about the role of woodland management and the importance of restoring biodiversity to ensure resilient, thriving ecosystems.
In the afternoon, volunteers set to work clearing sections of overgrown holly that were crowding out other species. By selectively removing younger holly plants and repurposing the cuttings to form habitat mounds for small mammals and invertebrates, the team helped open up the forest floor, creating space for bluebells and other native plants to grow in the spring.
Despite the grey skies and cool weather, the Virgin Media O₂ teams made meaningful progress contributing to the long-term health of this woodland.
Thank you to Virgin Media O₂ for their hands-on support in maintaining and enhancing local woodlands as part of their ongoing Social Value commitments.
