On a bright morning at Walthamstow Wetlands, a team from LMAX joined us for a Wild Work Day to support one of London’s most important reservoir sites. We kicked things off with a quick briefing about the site and the conservation work happening there, setting the scene for the day ahead. Following this, the group made their way across to a beautiful working area of the wetlands, where efforts focused on preparing the landscape for bird ringing activities. The team got stuck into cutting back dense brambles and tall Norfolk reeds, creating clear and safe spaces for mist nets to be set up. This work is essential in reducing stress on birds during the process and ensuring safe and effective monitoring conditions. Bird ringing is a key conservation method where small, lightweight rings are placed around a bird’s leg to help track movement, lifespan, and population trends. The data collected provides valuable insights into migration patterns and helps inform long-term environmental and biodiversity strategies.

After a productive morning, the team paused for lunch before enjoying a guided tour of the stunning Walthamstow Wetlands. The walk offered a chance to take in the site’s natural beauty, learn more about its ecosystems, and spot a variety of bird species that call the wetlands home.
