Sydenham Hill Woods
London Wildlife Trust
08 May 2026
With the sun shining in South London, a group from LRG spent the day volunteering at Sydenham Hill Woods to support the upkeep of the local woodland.
Sydenham Hill Woods forms part of the remaining area of the old Great North Wood and is recognised as a Site of Metropolitan Importance (SMI) for wildlife and biodiversity. Maintaining the woodland takes ongoing work, and the LRG team were keen to get involved.
After collecting tools and equipment, the group headed to the woodland’s eastern boundary to clear overgrowth along the fence line. Parts of the fence are due to be replaced, and clearing low-hanging branches and vegetation growing through the fencing helped prepare the area for repairs while also improving access along the adjacent pavement.
The team also removed invasive plant species from the area, helping to support native plants and the wider woodland ecosystem.
Following a lunch break, the group took part in a guided walk through the woods to learn more about the site and its history.
Thank you to everyone from LRG who gave up their Friday to support the local environment and community.
