On a sunny day at Walthamstow Wetlands, a team from LRG joined us for a Wild Work Day in support of one of London's most important reservoir sites. The day began with a briefing before the group headed out to get stuck into coppicing white willow - cutting it back so it grows thicker and provides richer nesting habitat for birds and other species.

After a well-earned tea break, the team returned to the willow before stopping for lunch. The afternoon wrapped up with a guided tour of the wetlands, learning about the land, its history, and the species that call it home.

Sitting right alongside the Walthamstow reservoirs, this work carries real benefits for the wider site too - managing the willow helps protect the banks and pathways around the reservoirs, keeping the whole area healthy and accessible. Willow responds strongly to cutting back, producing vigorous new growth, and a mix of young and mature willow creates a richer range of habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife.
