Birdbrook Nature Reserve
London Wildlife Trust
12 May 2026
Making their way to another nature reserve in London, members from Munich RE came together to continue their growing support of our local environment.
Birdbrook Nature Reserve is an important site for reptiles and other wildlife in South-East London, and it was in need of some maintenance to keep it healthy and accessible. The team from Munich RE began by digging out and removing goat's rue, a non-native invasive species that forms dense thickets and outcompetes native plants. Part of the team split off to tackle another task: preventing ecological succession (the process of grasses and shrubs being replaced by larger trees). Maintaining the meadow as a meadow is important for the wildlife that rely on it, so overgrown cherry trees were trimmed back across key parts of the nature reserve.
As the day went on, a few members of Munich RE went around the pathways across the nature reserve and cut back overgrown brambles and other vegetation, keeping the walkways accessible to others. Finally, to wrap up a day of excellent volunteer work, Munich RE did a litter pick at the entrance to Birdbrook, removing rubbish and keeping the site cleaner for the community.
Thank you to the members of Munich RE for another day of volunteering their time and helping maintain important nature reserves in London.
