Battram Wood
Royal Forestry Society

Recently, Speedy Hire members from across the country teamed up with GreenTheUK and the Royal Forestry Society at Battram Wood, just outside Birmingham. Together, they learned about woodland management and rolled up their sleeves for some hands-on conservation work.
Battram Wood is part of the National Forest and remains a relatively young woodland; the land was used for carrot farming only 30 years ago. As all its trees were planted within that time, regular maintenance is essential to keep the area healthy, diverse, and accessible to the public.
Despite windy weather, grey skies, and the threat of rain, the Speedy Hire team was undeterred. They began the day with a guided walk, learning about different tree species, the importance of biodiversity, and the challenges our forests face. Snack breaks were enjoyed under apple trees lining the pathways – several different varieties were growing there!
After lunch, the team headed to the far side of the forest. Deep within thickets of hazel and thorn bushes, young trees had begun to outgrow their protective tubes – plastic cylinders used to shield saplings from wildlife. The volunteers split into two groups, tackling the woodland from both directions. Tree tubes were removed one by one and carried out to the pathways, ready to be reused in the next planting season.
By the end of the day, both groups had made a huge impact, clearing a large section of woodland and coming together to finish on a high – even with a last-minute shower of rain!
