PROTECT & RESTORE TEMPERATE RAINFORESTS WITH GREENTHEUK

AIM:

To protect and restore temperate rainforests.

LOCATION:

West Coast of the UK, starting in Cornwall and Devon.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

The Temperate Rainforest project is an important initiative to protect and restore these ancient woodlands on the west coast. These rainforests are filled to the brim with unique biodiversity and are facing a myriad of threats, ranging from invasive species, to overgrazing and climate change. Careful management practices and tested restoration techniques will be used across sites in Cornwall and Devon.

Example activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Halo thinning
  • Glade creation
  • Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) control

ABOUT PLANTLIFE:

Plantlife is the global charity working to secure a world rich in plants and fungi, and protect the vital habitats which so many species call home. Wild plants and fungi underpin the health of our environment. They can help us to resolve the climate, ecological and societal challenges we face. Plantlife works to protect and restore temperate rainforests, meadows, grasslands and other environments for the benefit of rare and threatened species. The charity also manages 24 nature reserves across the country – from Carmarthenshire to Caithness and Cumbria to Kent. In 2001, Plantlife also developed the first Important Plant Area (IPA) criteria, defined as sites with exceptional botanical richness; rare, threatened and socio-economically valuable plant species; and rare and threatened habitats.
