RESTORING PEATLAND WITH GREENTHEUK
AIM:
This project aims to protect and restore Somerset’s lowland peatlands across the Levels and Moors. This area encompasses one of the most important freshwater wetland systems, providing habitat for the largest population of breeding waders in the lowlands of the UK. The deep peat provides unique wetland habitats that lock away carbon, support rare wildlife, and naturally purify and regulate our water systems.
By reversing damage caused by drainage, intensive agriculture and peat extraction, the project seeks to continue to store carbon, regulate flooding and sustain biodiversity.
LOCATION:
Somerset, UK.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Restoring and protecting the UK’s damaged peatland habitats is vital for storing carbon, supporting wildlife, regulating water quality and reducing flood risk. Over 80% of the UK’s peatlands are currently degraded, leading to significant carbon emissions and habitat loss. This project works to re-wet and restore some of the deepest peat areas in England, reducing carbon release and improving conditions for biodiversity.
